Post by Rhasputin Thu Mar 15, 2012 9:43 pm

I just got this rabbit out of the 'easter rabbit bin' today, but I haven't got a clue about rabbit colours.
It has a black nose and fades to blue,it's ears are blue, feet are blue, and tail is blue. Eyes are very pink!

Here she is

Well I figured she was himi, but I don't know the colour. Is it considered blue in rabbits?

yeah Happy I'd say most likely blue point....if she was Seal point (black) she'd have brown tones rather than blue coming off the points....but I don't know that blue would normally have such a dark nose

I am sorry to contradict you but this is incorrect.

Black himilayan[aka pointed white or californian depending on breed] has black points, there is no such thing as seal point himilayan in rabbits. While the phenotypes are similar to those found in mice they are not the same. The himilayan in rabbits is truely a pointed white, it is not shaded, so the points are true to color and can be bred to have distinct lines of demarcation.

She is a black himilayan or californian, the gray shading is normal as it appears to be a young animal and the points are still coming in. As she matures the points may or may not improve, poorly bred pointed whites have poor points, this includes mealiness, and shading.

What you call her color would depend on her breed, if she is a mini rex then yes it is a himilayan, however if it is a standard rex it is a californian. While they are the same color it is very common for different breeds to call them different names.

Do you have any idea about her age? And weight? Mini rex mature to 4 1/2 lbs and standard rex mature to 10 1/2lbs.

Aha! I was hoping you'd comment Cindy, you're our resident rabbit expert!

I really like her blue feet, I hope they don't turn black honestly. Laughing
She is young, about 10-12 weeks I was told, so she may mature into them. Happy

Thanks!

Edit: By the way, Cindy, do you know where I can get a magpie rabbit or two?

At that size I'd say she's a standard rex, so you'd call her Californian]. Also rex are a large heavy breed prone to foot problems due to the shorter thinner hair on the pad, if you keep her in a wire floored cage she will need a resting board, and if kept on a solid floored cage she will need it kept immaculately clean to avoid sore hocks. Rabbits will sit in their potty corners, and the urine will burn her feet more easily than other breeds.

As a commercial breed they require a higher protein feed than fancy breeds their size, I'd recommend a 18% feed at least until she is 6 months old.

She looks younger than that, but it may just be the pictures. Either way I doubt she'll get nice points, probably darken up a bit on the ears and tail but not enough that she actually gets the rich black points called for in the standard. The feet are the hardest points to get correct, and most suffer from barring and mealliness[the blue color your refering to]. This color is temp sensative, so the warmer she is kept the worse her points will be, the colder the darker. If you keep her in the house expect her points to stay washed out and mealy.

Magpie is a variety of Harlequin, comes in black, blue choc and lilac. However the magpie color can pop up in tricolor breedings and dwarf hotot breedings on occasion but isn't standardized so it's not a color that is worked with in anything except the harlequin.

Harlequin's are becoming more popular lately so there is a better chance of seeing them at the shows. I always tell people looking for a rabbit to go to a show, walk around and introduce yourself to breeders of the breeds your interested in. Rabbit people are pretty friendly so long as their not in the middle of showing we usually love to talk about our rabbits. You can find shows in your area on the arba website.

Thank you for the info!!!

She's going to be kept inside, in a garage with free range, so i don't think her feet should get sore since the floor will be cleaned daily. Happy

Is 'magpie' a specific pattern of harlequin?
I saw this photo online, and want one that's sort of similar if that's even possible: http://www.westaustralianrabbitcouncilinc.com/photos/Harlequin/Magpie-Rabbits/104-0414_IMG.JPG

Looks to be a standard Rex, blue Californian

Magpies and Harlequin's are a dime a dozen in my area. They are mainly in lionheads and mini rexes around here. Unless you are taking about the breed,Harlequin.

Harlequin-orange & another color
Magpie- white & another color

The one in the pic you posted is a Black Magpie Happy

You new girl is very pretty! And Im sure she will enjoy all the room in the garage

She looks black to me, but it could be the computer screen.

Harlequin is a breed.

Japanese and Magpie are varieties.
Japanese: is orange with black/blue/choc/lilac
Magpie is white with black/blue/choc/lilac

The photo is of a black magpie harlequin.

Harlequin markings are not accepted in any breed other than harlequin. They are used in some breeds to produce tricolors, however only in breeds where tricolors are accepted. There is no logical reason to breed harlequin marked lionheads as tricolors are not included in the current COD.

Windyhill, that is a lot of breeds. What varieties did you focus on in the rex, mini rex, dutch, satin , and new zealands?

I didnt show them or anything, they for were FFA & 4-H and after I got out of school, I kept breeding them to sell to the students who needed them.

rex- Black, Blue, Lilac,Sable & Seal
mini rex- Blue,Chinchilla,Chocolate,Lilac ,Sable Point & Seal
dutch- chocolate
satin- Siamese
new zealands- whites (for meat)
Mini and Standard Rex were my focus Happy

Now that I sold out of my Standard Rexes, I cant find them any more in my area Sad

On the St. Louis craigslist, there is TONS of harlequin lionheads and other breeds. People just breed them becouse they are pretty I think.
