When should I see whiskers curling? Empty When should I see whiskers curling?

My friend has a double rex (fuzy?) rat that we bred to one of my standard boys, for a classmate who wanted a rat that's been handled and socialized. The thing is, the whiskers really don't look curly. : / I know that the degree of curl will be waaay less then people who've been breeding for rex, but these little guys were born on Easter and are a bit over a week old, and look virtually straight. The classmate really just wants a social happy rat, so coat and colors doesn't really matter for her.

Whisker example:

Here's the mom, she was bought from Petco and we saw her mom and sister's who all had really fluffy coats.

She does not look like a double rex to me. She looks like a hairless. Double Rexes usually get more patchy thin fur...particularly around their bum and ears.
The babies are wonderful though! I am pretty sure rex babies would be born with curly whiskers just like the mice are born.
I really want to get a pair of bucks.

Pair of rex? I'm so disappointed, even though the classmate didn't care about coat, I was really hoping I'd get to have a curly little rex rat. So disappoint. : (

Yeah she looks true hairless to me. You can see curly whiskers from birth.....baby is just a standard coat.

She has curly wiskers, is it possible she is both a rex and a hairless? Or is the whiskers just something that they have if they don't loose enough fur? I just wonder because I saw her mother and sisters, and they weren't tight curls, but they were very fluffy.

Are you talking about the hairless momma? The hairless I've encountered usually have whiskers, but they tend to be short and curled. They certainly can be rex as well though.

This makes me want to find my rat baby photos. I don't remember seeing curly whiskers at that age for the rex babes but I could definitely be wrong! Mum was a standard so I probably wasn't looking or it wasn't obvious. Hairless is a world entirely unknown to me but I should know rex. Oi.

Thank you all for your feedback! I did digging and yes, I'd agree with her being hairless. : ( Thanks for the whisker pics though, I think it's safe to say that none of the bubs are rex, that they are all standard coat. It's extremely unlikely that the father carries hairless, so I guess we've got what we've got.

Curious question though, when the hairless rats start to loose their fur, do they look like the hairless mice? You know, starting with the face and wrists, looking like they're wearing a fancy coat?

Not really. They never grow in a proper coat to start with, but they do get baby fuzz, how long it takes for them to lose that fuzz seems to vary, and some keep just a bit of fuzz even as adults.

What Cindy said. In the pic I posted above with the group of babies there are 4 hairless...you can see they have thinner coats than the others....they always looked a few days behind in coat development until it just got sparser and sparser till as adults they have just a little fuzz on their nose and their whiskers.
