X-brindle Basic help Empty X-brindle Basic help

Post by tinyhartmouseries Sun Nov 04, 2012 2:15 pm

Will someone help me to understand the basics of X-brindles??? I believe they are dominant and you can only keep females. I am planning a litter for a teeny tiny side project.
I have one PEW x-brindle from Gypsytails. It's unknown what the PEW is covering, but perhaps blue or black. I have the following self bucks I am considering breeding her to...

Recessive Yellow
Extreme black
Ay
Blue

Am I right to think that I would get X-brindle in the color of the male? How would it end up, potentially, genetically, in each combination? Any help is appreciated.

I would breed her to the blue. Then you can see what she is carrying. Each baby in any color has a 50% chance of being xbrindle, but the baby boys will not thrive and survive to weaning if they are xbrindle.

Good point. So not all the boys will be X-brindle, but the ones that are will have kinked whiskers and will be lightly colored? Will the remaining 50% be selves?

Unless both parents are carrying s they will all be selves, yes. Male x-brindle baby boys are extremely light with very dark ears. They are unmistakeable after four or five days. Cull them early so the others get more milk. X-brindle males will all die of a copper deficiency. The longer they live, the more they begin to feel the deficiency and whatever problems go along with it.

What an absolutely strange gene....I don't know how much I will work with it but I'd like to experience just one litter of them.

Dino, do you have any pics of pied x-brindles? I have often wondered what a tricolor x-brindle would look like. Pied A^vy brindles look great, I think!

Also, I have never seen a blue x-brindle. Anybody got a pic?

Thanks for all the advice guys! I think blue would be very pretty too, though I am personally drawn to the red x-brindle idea. Dino, I don't have pics at this time, she's pretty much just a PEW!!! I was only just told that the PEW covers X-brindle. I like the idea of a broken, too.
